Supercharacters (and superclasses) were introduced in the 90's for the
unitriangular group over a finite field as an attempt to parameterize the
irreducible characters (and the conjugacy classes). More recently, the theory
has been extended for groups associated with the Jacobson radical of a finite
dimensional associative nilpotent algebra defined over a finite field. In this
seminar, we describe some connections with the theory of Gelfand pairs and
spherical functions, introducing and exemplifying these notions. Area(s):
