Description: |
In this talk, we discuss some recent results, obtained jointly with Benjamin Steinberg, about the Karoubi envelope of the syntactic semigroup of a shift. We see that, in a natural way, the Karoubi envelope is the best possible syntactic invariant of flow equivalence of sofic shifts. Outside the sofic realm, the Karoubi envelope is used to show that, under mild conditions, two graphs define flow equivalen Markov-Dyck shifts if and only if they are isomorphic. Shifts with property (A), introduced by Wolfgang Krieger, are interpreted in terms of the Karoubi envelope. As an application, a proof that property (A) is decidable for sofic shifts is obtained.
