Supercharacters, Gelfand pairs and spherical functions

Description:  Supercharacters (and superclasses) were introduced in the 90's for the unitriangular group over a finite field as an attempt to parameterize the irreducible characters (and the conjugacy classes). More recently, the theory has been extended for groups associated with the Jacobson radical of a finite dimensional associative nilpotent algebra defined over a finite field. In this seminar, we describe some connections with the theory of Gelfand pairs and spherical functions, introducing and exemplifying these notions.
