This talk is concerned with the numerical solution of a Volterra integral equation with non-standard weakly singular kernel which may arise in connection with some heat transfer problems. The singular behaviour of the solution near the origin causes the loss of the optimal (global) convergence orders of product integration and collocation methods. However, the optimal orders can be recovered if we use special techniques like graded meshes or certain nonpolynomial approximations. Some numerical results are presented which illustrate the performance of the methods.
