Optimization meets Medical Physics: tailored algorithms

Description:  Radiotherapy has been a fertile field for the development of algorithms to tackle the different optimization problems that arise in this area. A panoply of algorithms has been used for different problems including integer programming, linear programming or quadratic programming algorithms. In some cases, the same problem has been modelled in different ways leading to combinatorial optimization or continuous optimization problems. An example is the beam angle optimization problem to which particular attention will be given in this presentation. This is a highly nonconvex optimization problem whose objective function value is very expensive in terms of computational time. Tailored derivative-free algorithms used by our team to address this challenging problem will be presented.
