Dirac structures: from vector spaces to Lie bialgebroids
 
 
Description:  Dirac structures were introduced by Courant and Weinstein (and in a different framework by Dorfman) in the late eighties, as a generalization of Poisson structures. The simplest examples are defined on vector spaces, but it is in the framework of Lie algebroids where they are producing the most significative results from a geometrical point of view. In the early nineties, van der Schaft and Maschke introduced the concept of Port Controlled Hamiltonian Systems, naturally defined on Dirac structures, providing a huge catalogue of applications in Engineering. In this seminar we present a summary of the geometrical concept and discuss briefly some of the applications.
