Dynamics and stability of a network human-landscape model

Description:

Ecological networks serve as a modern tool to explore the dynamics of interconnected, non-uniform landscape regions. We develop a mathematical model by coupling human activity with an ecological model for a network of Landscape Units (LUs). The model consists of a network of interacting dynamical systems, all sharing the same qualitative structure. The interaction among the various dynamical systems is described by a linear diffusivity term, defining the coupling between each LU of the mosaic and its neighbours in terms of exchanging bio-energy fluxes. We study the dynamics in each LU, concerning equilibria and their stability, and prove the possible occurrence of Hopf bifurcations with consequent periodic oscillations of environmental and human variables. The connectivity between the LUs is considered, aiming to highlight the effects of single LU dynamics on the network landscape model. Numerical simulations of different scenarios are performed, and the results are discussed.
