The Category Theory Group of Coimbra (Portugal) organized a conference on Category Theory at the Hotel Tivoli Almansor, Carvoeiro (Algarve) during the week beginning on 18 June 2007. This is the first of four issues devoted to that CT2007 conference. The papers have been grouped under four topics. The topic for this issue is "Semi-abelian Categories" and the papers are:
