Presentation

The Centre for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra (CMUC) is a research unit of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra, interested in pure and applied mathematics, and actively involved in research and graduate and postgraduate education. CMUC facilities are located in the Department of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra.

CMUC hosts more than sixty researchers, currently organized into six research groups:

1. Algebra and Combinatorics
2. Algebra, Logic and Topology
3. Analysis
4. Geometry
5. Numerical Analysis and Optimization
6. Probability and Statistics

Besides these research groups, CMUC has three transverse Thematic Lines of activities, on Computational Mathematics, Outreach and Popularization of Mathematics, and History of Mathematics. The Centre's size and diversity encourage collaboration between people working in different fields, keeping in mind the fundamental unity of Mathematics.

The Laboratory for Computational Mathematics (LCM) of CMUC promotes research in computational mathematics and scientific computing, as techniques for the solution of challenging quantitative problems arising in Science, Engineering, Finance, and Management. The activity of LCM includes interdisciplinary research, high-performance computing and development of numerical software, collaboration with the industry, and support for graduate education. The activity of LCM is transversal to all groups and its driving force is the applied nature of the projects - which often involve people from other disciplines -, and the prospective collaboration with partners outside academia, namely in the industry.

CMUC is associated with the Joint UC|UP PhD Programme in Mathematics. This programme is jointly organized by the departments of mathematics of the universities of Coimbra and Porto and is based on the research teams at CMUC and the Centre for Mathematics of the University of Porto. The two teams have a high level of experience in the supervision of PhD students at the individual level. They have areas of common interest and expertise but also many areas of complementarity, thus effectively broadening the scope of this joint PhD programme. CMUC's various collaborations with other departments allow students to learn about the applications of their research, contributing to their professional orientation after the PhD, possibly outside academia.

CMUC is a research unit funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia). It has been awarded the highest classification by the last four international evaluation panels ("Excellent" in 2002 and 2008, "Exceptional" in 2013, and "Excellent" in 2019).

CMUC organizes regular seminars within the activities of the research groups and a colloquium. CMUC opens regularly calls for postdoc positions and some other calls for postgraduate education.
