Representations of the MONSTER

Description:  The MONSTER is the largest of the sporadic finite simple groups. In 1979 Conway and Norton published a remarkable conjecture relating representations of the MONSTER to the theory of modular forms. In 1998 Borcherds was awarded a Fields Medal for (among other things) his proof of the Conway-Norton conjecture, using the theory of infinite dimensional Lie algebras. The purpose of these lectures is to explain the Conway-Norton conjecture and to outline Borcherds' proof of it.
