Formal deformations and q-deformations in stage, and Hom-algebras

Description:  In this talk I will provide two point of views for deforming algebraic structures. The first approach is formal deformations introduced by Gerstenhaber for associative algebras, using one parameter formal power series, and then extend to Lie algebras by Nijenhuis and Richardson. It will be illustrated by comparing deformations of a Lie algebra and those of its enveloping algebra. The second approach concerns q-deformations used by physicists to deform Witt and Virasoro algebras. It leads to a new class of algebras, called Hom-algebras, obtained by twisting the classical identities by a homomorphism. In my talk I will summarize and present the recent developments in this topic.
