Hermitian matrices and Hodge numbers of irregular algebraic surfaces

Description:  In this talk it will be explained how properties of spaces of hermitian matrices can be used to obtain lower bounds for the h^1,1 Hodge number of irregular algebraic surfaces and in particular to show the non existence of surfaces with certain invariants. After a brief explanation of the concepts involved and a quick survey on some related linear algebra results, recent research together with A. Causin and G. P. Pirola will be discussed.
