When are epimorphisms of profinite groups surjective?

Description:  After a brief historical survey, we give a positive answer for full subcategories of profinite groups corresponding to Melnikov formations. We proceed to deduce that epimorphisms of pronilpotent groups are surjective. Finally, we discuss some negative examples and open problems.
