In this talk, we present methods to deal with quasilinear elliptic problems involving asymptotically linear operators. For this class of problems, one must look for solutions in the space of functions of bounded variation, which allows for discontinuous elements. In the first part of the talk, we outline some key features of this space, and in the second part, we discuss recent results concerning these problems.
