On the solution set of the matrix equation AX-XA=I

Description:  Matrix equations like AX-YB=C and AX-XB=C have been extensively studied in the literature because of their importance in linear control. The case AX-XA=I has also been considered, though briefly; as the commutator AX-XA has zero trace, our equation has solutions only if the base field has finite characteristic. I will tell you what I know about the structure of the set of all its solutions.
