The existence of global 1-forms on surfaces of general type imposes constraints on the existence of curves of low genus on the surface. Also sometimes the existence of certain curves on these surfaces allows us to understand or characterize the surface. In this talk I'll discuss some of these phenomena. Part of the results in this talk are joint work with G.P. Pirola and R.Pardini.
