The unfolding of some strictly syntax based poetry is viewed from the perspective of dynamical systems theory. I will provide examples of this, in particular of a type of 13th century lyrical style, the generalisation of which gives rise to mathematical questions. In the search for answers we find ourselves in 20th century mathematics of iterative maps and chaotic dynamics. Joint work with A. R. Champneys, U. of Bristol, UK.
