The aim of this talk is to characterize those split extensions corresponding to the classical semidirect product in Jonsson-Tarski varieties, with particular attention to the cases of monoids and unitary magmas, and to compare the classical notion of semidirect product with the categorical one, due to Bourn and Janelidze, in this context.
