The Portuguese team won four bronze medals and two honourable mentions at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO2026), the largest international mathematics competition. The IMO 2026 took place between July 14 and July 20, 2026, in Shanghai, China.

In this extremely demanding competition, the Portuguese team consisted of Afonso Pereira Valentim (12º ano, Escola Secundária José Saramago, Mafra), Alexandre Sousa Ferreira (12º ano, Colégio Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Porto), Anton Gavrilov (12º ano, Escola Secundária Sebastião da Gama, Setúbal), Guilherme Duarte Cabral (11º ano, Escola Secundária Tomás Cabreira, Faro), Rafael Alexandre de Andrade Soares Marques (11º ano, Escola Secundária Camões, Lisboa), Tomás Prata Vidal (12º ano, Grande Colégio Universal, Porto), as well as team leader Joana Teles (Department of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra) and deputy leader Nuno Arala (postdoc researcher at Leibniz University Hannover).

Portugal's participation in these competitions is organised by the Portuguese Mathematical Society, and the selection and preparation of students is the responsibility of the Delfos School, a project of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra and CMUC.
