For already 19 years, the Delfos Project has been preparing and selecting the Portuguese team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). This year, the Portuguese team won a silver medal, three bronze medals and two honorable mentions (the event took place on 21 and 22 September 2020).

 

The members of the Portuguese team were the Delphic students Leonardo Tavares (11th year, Lisbon), Nuno Carneiro (finished 12th year, Viana do Castelo), Pedro Dias (finished 12th year, Lisbon), Rui Wang (finished 12th year, Faro), Tiago Marques (11th year, Santa Maria da Feira) and Tiago Mourão (11th year, Santa Maria da Feira). Pedro Dias won a silver medal. Leonardo Tavares, Rui Wang and Tiago Marques won a bronze medal. Nuno Carneiro and Tiago Mourão received an honorable mention.

 

Professor Joana Teles, from DMUC, was the team leader; CMUC PhD student João Santos was the deputy leader and CMUC researchers Cristina Caldeira and Alfredo Costa acted as "Observers", collaborating with the leader and deputy leader in some tasks.

 

The Portuguese team got an overall of 112 points (44th place among the 105 participating countries). It was the fifth best classification ever of Portugal. Detailed information on the results of the competition can be found on the official IMO page (https://www.imo-official.org/).
