As part of the participation of Marco de Canaveses Secondary School in the Mathematics and Street Art competition, organized by the Regional Delegation of the Portuguese Mathematics Society and integrated into the dissemination activities developed jointly with the Centre for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra and the Department of Mathematics of FCTUC, a student's work was awarded second place (category B), which led to the painting of a mural. This activity was carried out by a group of students and coordinated by their Visual Art teacher.

The mural entitled "Niemeyer's Golden Rectangle" and its project was developed around the drawings that are believed to have been the basis for the design of the main facade of the church of St. Francis of Assisi in Pampulha, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. This building, inaugurated in 1940, was designed by the world-famous and award-winning architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012). The mural highlights the implicit drawings in the architecture project, showing the golden rectangle and the parable of the church's major nave, the latter also followed by the mathematical expressions that sustain it.
In short, the aim was to demonstrate that in architecture, mathematics and geometry are linked not only to the harmony but also to the beauty of shapes.
The location of the mural on an outer wall of the school allows it to be seen and visited at any time.
To mark the inauguration ceremony of this urban intervention, an event will be held which celebrates the connection between mathematics and architecture, bringing together the entire school community.
