The Centre for Mathematics of the University of Coimbra was ranked with "Excellent", the best possible mark, in the recent evaluation of R&D Units by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The evaluation was made by an international panel of Mathematicians. Only two other research centers in Mathematics got the highest classification.

CMUC is one of the largest mathematical R&D Units in Portugal. It gathers more than 60 mathematicians who work in the various areas of mathematics, from pure to applied. Besides research, the CMUC is also focused on postgraduate training and mathematics popularization.
