Adérito Araújo was appointed President of the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI). He will take up his duties on 1 January 2018. After having held the position of Vice-President in the last two years, he will, from now on, lead the European institution.
ECMI is a consortium of academic institutions and industrial companies that acts co-operatively with the following aims:
- To promote and support the use of mathematical modelling, simulation, and optimization in any activity of social or economic importance.
- To educate Industrial Mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts.
- To operate on a European scale.
Through several initiatives in research, teaching or the transfer of technology, ECMI has made a decisive contribution to strengthen industrial mathematics in Europe by facilitating the access of companies to the knowledge and know-how of academia.
The new ECMI Board will be:
President: Adérito Araújo, University of Coimbra
Vice-President: Nataša Krejić, University of Novi Sad
Former President: Dietmar Hömberg, Weierstrass Institute and Technische Universität Berlin
Executive Director: Poul G. Hjorth, Technical University of Denmark, Kgs. Lyngby
Treasurer: Thomas Götz, University Koblenz-Landau
In Portugal, the institutional members of ECMI are the CMUC, the Department of Mathematics of IST (Lisbon) and CMUP (the Centre for Mathematics of the University of Porto).
