The mathematics of liquid crystals

Description:  The understanding of liquid crystal behaviour has traditionally been an area with a fertile interaction between science and mathematics. The lecture will describe different theories of liquid crystals and some recent results concerning their predictions and the connection between them.

Biography:
Sir John M. Ball, University of Oxford, is the winner of the 2018 King Faisal Prize for Science for his outstanding contributions to mathematics. Ball is Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy at Oxford and director of its Centre for Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations. His main research areas are the calculus of variations, nonlinear partial differential equations, infinite-dimensional dynamical systems and their applications to nonlinear mechanics, and the mathematics of liquid crystals. Ball received the Theodore von Kármán Prize in 1999 with Stuart S. Antman, the Sylvester Medal in 2009, and was elected an inaugural Fellow of the AMS and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He has served as president of the London Mathematical Society (1996-1998) and the International Mathematical Union (2003-2006).
